Compressed Air Hose Leaks and Air Hose Safety

Ask a Question:

What does OSHA say about hose safety?

Cut HP

Answer: An OSHA guideline publication states:

Compressed Air Hose Leaks and Air Hose Safety

Hoses, cables, and other equipment shall be kept clear of passageways, ladders and stairs.

OSHA says reduce your slips, trips and falls. Slips, trips and falls constitute the majority of general industry accidents, which cause 15% of all accidental deaths, and are second only to motor vehicles as a cause of fatalities. The OSHA standard for walking and working surfaces apply to all permanent places of employment, except where only domestic, mining, or agricultural work is performed. Consider adding reels to increase safety & efficiency with your electrical cords, welding cables, air hose, oil, grease, liquid/water or fuel hoses.

Ask a Question:

Why should my plant use Air Hose Reels with our air tools?

Answer: If your business or plant has multiple air hoses running from your air compressor to a variety of air tools, then industrial air hose reels can be one of your most effective equipment additions you will ever make, as well as one of the safest!

Here are 5 Reasons to use Air Hose Reels:

1. Efficiency

Hose reels make all your hose handling more efficient. An organized, clean workplace is proven to be more efficient.

2. Safety

Hose reels decrease you chances of injuries from tripping hazards. Reduce accidents and insurance expense: Slips, trips and falls are the leading cause of work stoppage in industry.

3. Protects Equipment

Hoses (and cords) last five times longer when stored on a reel. This can save you from replacing hoses as often.

4. Stops Leakages

Hoses on reels can reduce the threat of expensive air leakages.

5. Increase Productivity

Locating your air hoses when and where you need them increases productivity. All these factors help improve your work environment, which saves you time, equipment and money.

Have you ever wondered what that hissing sound is when you walk through your plant or shop area? Most likely it is a COMPRESSED AIR LEAK. But what about the air leaks you can't hear? Size cannot be judged by sound.

Do You know how much your AIR LEAKS are costing you? A Department of Energy publications states:

Compressed air leaks can account for 20% to 30% of compressors cfm output in small to medium size plants.

In other words- you could be losing up to 30% of your compressed air because of AIR LEAKS! That is your money leaking away! It is worth the effort to find and fix your air leaks.

Ask a Question:

How do you estimate the SIZE and COST of an AIR LEAK?

Answer:

Here is how to estimate the size of air leaks:

It is not very hard. We will use the "TIME METHOD" to estimate percentages of loss due to air leaks in your plant.

1.Turn OFF all air operated end-user equipment.

2.Start your air compressor and let it cycle 5 times.

3.Time the OFF-LINE/UNLOAD TIME (not pumping time) using your watch. (Example: 5 minutes)

4.Time the ON-LINE/LOAD TIME (pumping time) using your watch. (Example: 2 minutes)

5.Calculate total percentage of air leaks as follows: Add the OFF / UNLOAD and the ON / LOAD times together: Example: T(5 minutes) + T (2 minutes)= 7 minutes) Divide ON / LOAD time T (2 minutes) by the total minutes: 2 ÷ 7 = 0.29

The result tells you 29% of your air compressors CFMs are doing nothing but maintaining your AIR LEAKS.

How to figure the cost of air leaks:
Based on values from the Compressed Air & Gas Handbook, we can assume

4* CFM per air compressor horsepower. So, if you have a 100 HP compressor and the above determined 29% air leaks -use this formula:

100 HP x 4*=400 CFM x 29% (.29 air leak loss) = 116 wasted CFM.

As the chart below shows, you now know that you are losing over ,000 a year because of AIR LEAKS.

SIZE OF YOUR LEAK CFM AIR LOSS WASTED DOLLARS PER YEAR
Orifice -----Diameter------Inches

1/32 -----------1.6 ----------211.70

3/32 ----------14.5 ---------1905.30

1/4 -----------104.0 ------13665.60

1/2 -----------415.0 -------54531.00

These figures are based on values from the Compressed Air & Gas Institute Handbook. Calculations assume a conservative cost of $.25 /1000 cubic feet of compressed air, 100% coefficient of flow and working 8,760 hours/year at 100 psig.

192-168-2-1 Wireless Router IP Address - What is It?

What is an IP Address?

Every device that is connected to a network, including the Internet, has an Internet Protocol (IP) address. The Internet Protocol defines a standard digital method that is used by computer devices to communicate with each other. These devices communicate by delivering and receiving datagrams, called data packets, from the source device to the destination device and vice versa over a network. Each device has a unique IP address that allows devices to find each other on a network and to exchange data packets.

HP Pavillion

Networks can be created using telephone lines, cell phones, cable TV, Ethernet cables, and with wireless routers. Routers are used to assign temporary IP addresses to devices connected to the local area network the router controls and to "route" data packets around a network to the correct devices. Some routers have extra features such as encryption of data packets, data packet error correction, and wireless access.

192-168-2-1 Wireless Router IP Address - What is It?

Internet Protocol version 4 (IPv4) defines 32-bit IP addresses is made up by of a group of four numbers ranging from 0.0.0.0 to 255.255.255.255. This equates to about 4 billion IP addresses. A 128-bit version of the Internet Protocol called IPv6 has been developed that will allow for many more addresses if IP addresses run out with IPv4.

How to use a Wireless Router IP Address

All wireless routers have one Internet Protocol (IP) address that is used as the address for the local area network (LAN) and one that is used for an external wide area network (WAN) connection such as the Internet. Internal (LAN) IP addresses are normally pre-set to the router manufacturer's factory default IP address. When you enter the router's IP address into your web browser as a http request (for example http://192.168.1.245 for a Linksys router), the browser will send a request to your router to open the router's default administration page so you can access the router's settings.

How to find your Wireless Router IP Address

The first place to check is in the wireless router's user manual. If you don't have a user manual or can't find it, you can try visiting the manufacturer's website and search for the default IP address there. Alternatively, connect your wireless router with its Ethernet cable to your computer and power up and start both devices. If you are running a Windows operating system such as Windows XP or Vista, bring up the Command Prompt window (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Command Prompt) and type the word "ipconfig" without the quotes at the prompt and press enter. You should see a list of IP addresses and the one that is listed next to the "Default Gateway" is the IP address of the wireless router you have connected to your computer. Next open your web browser and type in the http request using that same IP address and you should see the router's administration page where you can log in (the user manual will also have the default username and password for the router's administration page) to change the router's settings.

Wireless router manufacturer's can use different factory pre-set IP addresses for different model routers they manufacture. The factory pre-set IP address is usually stored in the firmware of the router. So if you can not get into your router's administration page you may need to try one of the other IP addresses the manufacturer uses with other models in case the firmware was upgraded after the publication date of the user manual. For a list of common IP addresses used by router Manufactures, visit the best wireless router website.

Why is My Mouse Freezing? - A Guide to Fix Mouse Freezes

Have you been asking - why is my mouse freezing? Mouse freezes are actually a pretty common problem. Typically they come in two forms. The first is that the mouse icon freezes or locks up but you can still move it around. The other kind is the mouse freezes and the whole computer seems to lock up with it. Both are symptoms of the same problem.

Before doing anything, take a look at how many programs you have open when your mouse freezes up. If you are running multiple programs at once and have limited RAM, this can be a major cause of mouse freezing. The solution is either run fewer programs or simply purchase additional RAM.

HP Pavillion

You also want to make sure your mouse drivers are up to date. In these cases simply go to the manufacturer website and check for any driver updates you may have missed out on.

Why is My Mouse Freezing? - A Guide to Fix Mouse Freezes

But the most common cause of mouse freezing is due to errors in the Windows registry. The registry contains settings and commands that are utilized by the mouse to run properly. When there are errors in the registry this can cause a breakdown in the communication between your mouse and system. When your computer cannot communicate properly it will lock up or freeze.

Unfortunately there is no way to manually fix this problem. The registry is an extremely complex directory that is also sensitive to alterations. If you adjust or remove the wrong registry files your entire system can collapse.

This is why I highly recommend scanning your computer with a top flight registry cleaner. Not only can it fix mouse freezing, it will also speed up your computer considerably. So stop asking why is my mouse freezing. Scan your computer for free below and fix the problem today.

The Truth About Husqvarna Lawn Mowers

As a publisher-reviewer, I review many equipments, and now it's the turn of lawn mowers.

Looking at lawn mowers from a buyer's angle, I tried to list my expectations. Firstly, the mower should do what it's meant to do, i.e., mow lawns efficiently. Next, it should fulfill the promise the seller makes to prospective buyers. And most importantly, the price should be reasonable and competitive.

Cut HP

Cutting a long story short, I zeroed in on a popular brand of lawn mowers - Husqvarna.

The Truth About Husqvarna Lawn Mowers

Do They Have Enough Models?

You need to make a basic choice between walk-behind and ride-on mowers. The size of your lawn and how frequently you mow it should help you decide which one you want. Some users may take factors, such as mulching ability, and side discharge, into account, before deciding.

Husqvarna offers walk-behind mowers in several variants: the push type, the self propelled type, electrical mowers, and battery operated mowers.

Ride-on mowers have more maneuverability and the driver has a good view of the front. These mowers come with a front mounted cutting deck and are best suited for bigger lawns with long grass. The bagging and collection facility prevents the cut grass and weeds from spreading into the lawn. Side ejection and rear ejection options are also available.

Does Steering Matter?

Front wheel steering guarantees good traction and braking; rear wheel steering offers good tracking when reversing uphill and also projects the rear section when turning. Husqvarna has an articulated steering option, with a bio-clip cutting desk that causes leaves to be turned to fine mulch.

How Much Power Do You Need?

Husqvarna's Walk-Behind Mowers range from 4.5 HP to 5.5 HP, while Riding Mowers are 18 HP to 26 HP. Husqvarna's YTH yard tractors feed on tall grass. This mower range comes with features like step-through fender design, hydrostatic transmission, cup holders, and decks to mulch, discharge or bag. And a Briggs & Stratton engine, to boot.

Do You Really Need An Auto Mower?

If you are lazy, the auto mower may actually make you lazier still, as it does everything for you. You don't have to walk behind or ride a mower. All you have to do is make a boundary by pinning a wire to the ground. Then you put the auto mower in the middle and it mows.

If you think a tree on your lawn especially with roots above the ground might damage your auto mower, the manufacturer assures not to worry. The collision sensors, they say, not only stop it, but also help reverse the mower when it comes lightly in contact with objects. (I invite anyone with real experience to testify this)

The running cost is fairly low. Depending on the size of the lawn it may cost up to per year for electricity. Also, it is emission-free and makes almost no noise.

What About Maintenance? Warranty? Accessories?

Northern Tool offers toll free tech support through its 50 outlets in 11 states. So, you have spares and service within easy reach, with a 2 - 3 years extendable warranty, for parts and labor. Also, you can choose from a wide range of accessories: lawn aerators, tail mowers, tow behind sprayers, tow behind lawn sweeps, manure spreaders and industrial tools trailer carts.

How about the Price?

They are the best value for money as far as I've seen: riding mowers cost from 00 - 3600 and walk-behinds, 0 - 600. Of course, they also come with finance schemes.

How good are they really, taking all factors into account?

Popular Mechanics has rated Husqvarna the best mower of 2007.

HP LaserJet Pro M1132 MFP Toner Review

We are now living in an age where consumers are used to printers which will all in one go scan, copy, fax, print pictures coming from smart cards as well as on to DVDs, create duplex documents, link by means of Bluetooth as well as Wi-Fi and in addition just about make you a mug of tea while doing so. But occasionally more or less all you actually want - particularly in home or small business surroundings - is a hard-working mono printer which will generate high quality documents at a decent pace whilst keeping down running expenditure, together with the rare scan added too every once in awhile.

HP's entry-level LaserJet Pro M1132 MFP multi-function laser printer is designed to carry out just that purpose. It is really neat and compact, measuring a tidy 415 x 265 x 250mm as well as weighing a relatively light 7kg. It has a stylish - while not being showy - matt black surface finish and all controls and connections are kept to a minimum. A drop-down input tray in the front stores 150 sheets of A4, and immediately over it, the built-in output bin can cope with anywhere up to 100 sheets at the same time. Duplex printing needs to be performed by hand, however, plus there are no USB flash card or even memory card slots.

Cut HP

There's furthermore a conspicuous shortage of Ethernet or Wi-Fi connections, therefore you're left basically with a link to the Computer by means of USB lead. That being said, HP has decreased the set-up time substantially by means of including their Smart Install technology which allows you to put the USB directly into the pc and start the complete set up procedure with the necessity for a separate CD.

HP LaserJet Pro M1132 MFP Toner Review

Much like almost everything else, the control panel is stripped all the way down to basics, utilizing a two-digit LED display next to up and down arrows, start and stop buttons as well as a set-up button that shuttles among amounts of copies, dark/light tone and also copy size. Whilst we comprehend the wish for simpleness, this nevertheless seems much like a dinosaur set up in contrast to the complexity which most multi-function printers presently manage.

Print speed, in contrast, is outstanding, as the standard Fast Res 600 configuration made the advertised 18ppm of A4 sheets, with even the Fast Res 1200 option achieving 12ppm and the Fast Res 600, put in Economode, sent out 19 ppm. Print quality using the HP LaserJet M1132 toner cartridge on both the primary configurations was consistently good, with strong, good blacks. Scanning resolution can stretch up to 1200dpi however keep in mind that the primary default 150dpi configuration for scanning documents managed at most 4ppm.

Energy conscious users will probably be happy about HP's Auto-On/Auto-Off element that puts the device in sleep mode anytime it senses it is not being made use of, also cartridge running outlays work out at around 3.1p per page.

HP LaserJet Pro M1132 MFP Toner Review

The no-frills, no-bells HP LaserJet Pro M1132 MFP is a cool as well as quick small mono printer which is fast to setup and it has helpful electricity saving features, however the controls seem old-fashioned and furthermore scanning is time-consuming. How to Print Screen

You have something that you want to show to someone else, per a print screen, but you have no idea exactly how to do this. Don't worry, the riddle will be solved -- just follow a few simple steps and you should be able to get your image to another person or to your printer in no time.

If you are using a Windows system, just follow these steps.

HP Pavillion

Step 1: Find the image you want to print and have it ready on the monitor.

How to Print Screen

Step 2: Locate and press the button on your keyboard called "Print Screen". It may be abbreviated "Prt Scrn" and will usually be located above the arrow keys, and above the "Insert" key on your keyboard.

Step 3: Now open up your copy of MS Paint. All computers that have Windows will have this installed standard. If you're having trouble finding it, the quickest way to find it is to hit "Search" and then type in "Paint". You will see an icon appear that will say "Paint" or the program itself will open. If the icon appears, double-click on the paint icon and the program will open up.

Step 4: Now all you have to do is either hit CTRL+V on your computer or pull down the menu that says "Edit" with your mouse and select the word "Paste" from your menu. Congratulations, you've just printed your entire screen.

Step 5: What you have printed is your entire screen. You can crop the picture to just save what you want to show people by selecting the dashed square in the upper left hand corner of the Paint tool, then adjust the rectangle so that it creates a border around where you want to crop, and hit "Cut" from your Edit menu.

It will look like it disappeared entirely, but it's not gone forever. You just moved it to your clipboard. Open a new document and hit "Paste" and what you had cut just a few seconds ago will appear like magic.

Step 6: If you want to save it on your computer, under the file menu is the word "Save", and that will allow you to save your picture. You also may print this by selecting the "Print" option from the File Menu.

But what if you own a Mac? You can look from now until Kingdom Come and never find the "Print Screen" button. Again, just follow a few simple steps and you'll be on your way in no time.

Step 1: Locate what you want to find, then press the Apple key, Shift and the 3 key at the same time. If you have sound on your card, you will hear a sound like a camera being snapped. You will also see the words "Picture 1" on an icon somewhere on your desktop.

Step 2: If you just want a partial screen shot, then hit the Apple Key + SHIFT + 4. A cropping tool will appear where your cursor is located. Double-click the icon and then drag the cursor. Whatever is inside this box will be "Printed". Once you have what you want to print, just release the mouse, and you will hear the "snapshot" sound that I described in Step 1.

Step 3: You can also use the Applications Print Screen. If you are here and hit the Apple Key + SHIFT + 4, the same cropping tool should appear. If you hit the space bar, it will turn into a camera. You can move the camera around using your mouse. As the camera goes over an application, it will turn blue. Click on the application you want (that is, when it's blue) and the "snapshot" sound will again be heard.

Step 4: If you want to print your screen, just hit the Apple Key + P, for print, and it will print off your work.

Tip for saving: If you get a chance to choose your file format, the most economical as far as drive space is ".jpg" or ".jpeg", this will save it as a much clearer image and sharper color than a.gif, which is better for animated files, and a.bmp which is higher quality, but takes up much more disk space. To select the file format on a Windows computer, Select the "Save" Menu. Below the name, it will tell you what the current file format is. It should default to a JPEG file. If it does not, pull the arrow on the right hand side and select.jpg format and then save it as this.

On MAC OS 10.4, the default is.png, but you can save it as a.jpg every time by selecting it or changing it in Terminal if you type in the following code:

"defaults write com.apple.screencapture type jpg
Killall SystemUIServer"

Doing this should save all your pictures on a MAC as.jpg files.

The Best Computer For Graphic Design

Since Desktop Publishing (DTP) came out in the eighties, graphic designers have been utilizing computer technology. This has pushed all graphic designers to become competent with computer hardware at the very least.

What is Desktop Publishing (DTP)? In the 1980s, it was a common term applied to digital publishing systems. These systems were developed to replace large, pre-press, specialist design and compositing systems.

HP Pavillion

Graphic designers rely heavily on computers whether these are Windows PCs or Apple Macs. Whichever computer a graphic designer chooses to use, he/she will opt for the best computer that he/she can purchase. Graphic designers will rarely choose cheap computer hardware.

The Best Computer For Graphic Design

Back in the eighties, Macs were the only choice for designing and printing. Almost all design layout and graphics software was developed for Macs only or even if the software could be used in Microsoft Windows PC, it was much more reliable on a Mac. Additionally, at that time, Macs were associated with the different technologies used in the prepress and Windows PC was just not a practical choice. Today, modern versions of Mac OS X and Windows allow graphics designers to use design software either in a Mac or PC - they are no longer forced to choose one over the other.

Many graphic designers are not IT experts and making a decision on which computer to buy can be quite daunting. Of course, if money is not a problem, the decision would simply be to buy the most expensive Apple Mac or Windows PC. But most designers cannot afford to do that. In fact, some creative professionals have budgets for second hand equipment only. What really matters to these graphic designers are issues that regular computer users do not even have to think about. These are printer color accuracy, monitor calibration, hard disk speed and external storage devices for gigabytes of data.

Recent studies show that the top 5 computers for graphic design are a mix of Macs and PCs and both laptop and desktop computers fall in this category. But just like any product that a consumer buys, it really is the personal preference of the designer whether he/she will use a desktop computer or a laptop. The important thing is that the user/graphic designer has the appropriate software for the type of computer that he/she wants to purchase.

The Top 5 computers for graphic design are:

Mac Pro Desktop

The Mac line of computers is still widely preferred by most graphic designers. According to Apple, the latest Mac Pro features the all new quad-core Intel Xeon "Nehalen" processor which makes the job of a graphic designer much easier. Apple states further that the new Mac Pro is up to 1.9 times faster than its predecessor. Each processor has an integrated memory controller that allows the processors to have faster access to stored data in the computer's memory, with memory latency decreased by up to 40 percent. This feature will save a lot of time for designers when they do their work.

MacBook Pro Laptop

The MacBook Pro Laptop comes in 13, 15 and 17 inch sizes. It has high-performance NVDIA graphics and LED backlit display which makes editing graphics easier and clearer. This latest model has battery power that lasts up to 8 hours (on 17-inch version). It is powered by the Intel Core 2 Duo processor.

Dell Studio XPS Desktop

The Dell Studio XPS Desktop features the Intel Core i5 and i7 processors. If you plan on working with intensive video or 3D editing, you can have an upgrade to the 16GB Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM. But its base 3GB memory will enable you to edit photos, create vector or raster designs with ease. Its high-definition ATI graphics card creates clear, precise and flawless graphics - just what a graphic designer needs.

Toshiba Qosmio Laptop

The Toshiba Qosimo is an affordable solution to your graphic design needs. It is powered by either the Intel Core i7 or i5 processor making it easier to create flawless graphics. It has a high-end NVIDIA GeForce graphics card, which ensures that you can clearly see every pixel and frame that you edit. It has a 6GB DDR3 1066MHz memory and a 1GB GDDR5 discrete graphics memory.

HP Pavilion Elite Desktop

The HP Pavilion Elite Desktop is an affordable computer. It is powered by either an AMD Athlon or an Intel Core processor that ranges from an X4 630 quad-core (Athlon) to an i7-980X six-core Extreme Edition (Intel). All HP Pavilion Elite Desktop computers come with genuine 64-bit Windows 7 for the latest technology. Memory ranges from 4GB up to 9GB which guarantees smooth and effortless run of the high-end graphics that you use.

Mergers and Acquisition - A Case Study and Analysis of HP-Compaq Merger

Brief Description

The following is a brief description of the two companies:

HP

Mergers and Acquisition - A Case Study and Analysis of HP-Compaq Merger

It all began in the year 1938 when two electrical engineering graduates from Stanford University called William Hewlett and David Packard started their business in a garage in Palo Alto. In a year's time, the partnership called Hewlett-Packard was made and by the year 1947, HP was incorporated. The company has been prospering ever since as its profits grew from five and half million dollars in 1951 to about 3 billion dollars in 1981. The pace of growth knew no bounds as HP's net revenue went up to 42 billion dollars in 1997. Starting with manufacturing audio oscillators, the company made its first computer in the year 1966 and it was by 1972 that it introduced the concept of personal computing by a calculator first which was further advanced into a personal computer in the year 1980. The company is also known for the laser-printer which it introduced in the year 1985.

Compaq

The company is better known as Compaq Computer Corporation. This was company that started itself as a personal computer company in the year 1982. It had the charm of being called the largest manufacturers of personal computing devices worldwide. The company was formed by two senior managers at Texas Instruments. The name of the company had come from-"Compatibility and Quality". The company introduced its first computer in the year 1983 after at a price of 2995 dollars. In spite of being portable, the problem with the computer was that it seemed to be a suitcase. Nevertheless, there were huge commercial benefits from the computer as it sold more than 53,000 units in the first year with a revenue generation of 111 million dollars.

Reasons for the Merger

A very simple question that arises here is that, if HP was progressing at such a tremendous pace, what was the reason that the company had to merge with Compaq? Carly Fiorina, who became the CEO of HP in the year 1999, had a key role to play in the merger that took place in 2001. She was the first woman to have taken over as CEO of such a big company and the first outsider too. She worked very efficiently as she travelled more than 250,000 miles in the first year as a CEO. Her basic aim was to modernize the culture of operation of HP. She laid great emphasis on the profitable sides of the business. This shows that she was very extravagant in her approach as a CEO. In spite of the growth in the market value of HP's share from 54.43 to 74.48 dollars, the company was still inefficient. This was because it could not meet the targets due to a failure of both company and industry. HP was forced to cut down on jobs and also be eluded from the privilege of having Price Water House Cooper's to take care of its audit. So, even the job of Fiorina was under threat. This meant that improvement in the internal strategies of the company was not going to be sufficient for the company's success. Ultimately, the company had to certainly plan out something different. So, it was decided that the company would be acquiring Compaq in a stock transaction whose net worth was 25 billion dollars. Initially, this merger was not planned. It started with a telephonic conversation between CEO HP, Fiorina and Chairman and CEO Compaq, Capellas. The idea behind the conversation was to discuss on a licensing agreement but it continued as a discussion on competitive strategy and finally a merger. It took two months for further studies and by September, 2001, the boards of the two companies approved of the merger. In spite of the decision coming from the CEO of HP, the merger was strongly opposed in the company. The two CEOs believed that the only way to fight the growing competition in terms of prices was to have a merger. But the investors and the other stakeholders thought that the company would never be able to have the loyalty of the Compaq customers, if products are sold with an HP logo on it. Other than this, there were questions on the synchronization of the organization's members with each other. This was because of the change in the organization culture as well. Even though these were supposed to serious problems with respect to the merger, the CEO of HP, Fiorina justified the same with the fact that the merger would remove one serious competitor in the over-supplied PC market of those days. She said that the market share of the company is bound to increase with the merger and also the working unit would double. (Hoopes, 2001)

Advantages of the Merger

Even though it seemed to be advantageous to very few people in the beginning, it was the strong determination of Fiorina that she was able to stand by her decision. Wall Street and all her investors had gone against the company lampooning her ideas with the saying that she has made 1+1=1.5 by her extravagant ways of expansion. Fiorina had put it this way that after the company's merger, not only would it have a larger share in the market but also the units of production would double. This would mean that the company would grow tremendously in volume. Her dream of competing with the giants in the field, IBM would also come true. She was of the view that much of the redundancy in the two companies would decrease as the internal costs on promotion, marketing and shipping would come down with the merger. This would produce the slightest harm to the collection of revenue. She used the ideas of competitive positioning to justify her plans of the merger. She said that the merger is based on the ideologies of consolidation and not on diversification. She could also defend allegations against the change in the HP was. She was of the view that the HP has always encouraged changes as it is about innovating and taking bold steps. She said that the company requires being consistent with creativity, improvement and modification. This merger had the capability of providing exactly the same. (Mergers and Acquisitions, 2010)

Advantages to the Shareholders

The following are the ways in which the company can be advantageous to its shareholders:

Unique Opportunity: The position of the enterprise is bound to better with the merger. The reason for the same was that now the value creation would be fresh, leadership qualities would improve, capabilities would improve and so would the sales and also the company's strategic differentiation would be better than the existing competitors. Other than this, one can also access the capabilities of Compaq directly hence reducing the cost structure in becoming the largest in the industry. Finally, one could also see an opportunity in reinvesting.

Stronger Company: The profitability is bound to increase in the enterprise, access and services sectors in high degrees. The company can also see a better opportunity in its research and development. The financial conditions of the company with respect to its EBIT and net cash are also on the incremental side.

Compelling Economics: The expected accumulation in IIP gains would be 13% in the first financial year. The company could also conduct a better segmentation of the market to forecast its revenues generation. This would go to as much as 2 and a half billion dollars of annual synergy.

Ability to Execute: As there would be integration in the planning procedures of the company, the chances of value creation would also be huge. Along with that the experience of leading a diversified employee structure would also be there. (HP to buy Compaq, 2001)
Opposition to the Merger

In fact, it was only CEO Fiorina who was in favor of going with the merger. This is a practical application of Agency problem that arises because of change in financial strategies of the company owners and the management. Fiorina was certain to lose her job if the merger didn't take effect. The reason was that HP was not able to meet the demand targets under her leadership. But the owners were against the merger due to the following beliefs of the owners:

The new portfolio would be less preferable: The position of the company as a larger supplier of PCs would certainly increase the amount of risk and involve a lot of investment as well. Another important reason in this context is that HP's prime interest in Imaging and Printing would not exist anymore as a result diluting the interest of the stockholders. In fact the company owners also feel that there would be a lower margin and ROI (return on investment).

Strategic Problems would remain Unsolved: The market position in high-end servers and services would still remain in spite of the merger. The price of the PCS would not come down to be affordable by all. The requisite change in material for imaging and printing also would not exist. This merger would have no effect on the low end servers as Dell would be there in the lead and high-end servers either where IBM and Sun would have the lead. The company would also be eluded from the advantages of outsourcing because of the surplus labor it would have. So, the quality is not guaranteed to improve. Finally, the merger would not equal IBM under any condition as thought by Fiorina.

Huge Integrated Risks: There have been no examples of success with such huge mergers. Generally when the market doesn't support such mergers, don't do well as is the case here. When HP could not manage its organization properly, integration would only add on to the difficulties. It would be even more difficult under the conditions because of the existing competitions between HP and Compaq. Being prone to such risky conditions, the company would also have to vary its costs causing greater trouble for the owner. The biggest factor of all is that to integrate the culture existing in the two companies would be a very difficult job.

Financial Impact: This is mostly because the market reactions are negative. On the other hand, the position of Compaq was totally different from HP. As the company would have a greater contribution to the revenue and HP being diluted at the same time, the problems are bound to develop. This would mean that drawing money from the equity market would also be difficult for HP. In fact this might not seem to be a very profitable merger for Compaq as well in the future.

The basic problem that the owners of the company had with this merger was that it would hamper the core values of HP. They felt that it is better to preserve wealth rather than to risk it with extravagant risk taking. This high risk profile of Fiorina was a little unacceptable for the owners of the company in light of its prospects.

So, as far as this merger between HP and Compaq is concerned, on side there was this strong determination of the CEO, Fiorina and on the other side was the strong opposition from the company owners. This opposition continued from the market including all the investors of the company. So, this practical Agency problem was very famous considering the fact that it contained two of the most powerful hardware companies in the world. There were a number of options like Change Management, Economic wise Management, and Organizational Management which could be considered to analyze the issue. But this case study can be solved best by a strategy wise analysis. (HP-Compaq merger faces stiff opposition from shareholders stock prices fall again, 2001)

Strategic Analysis of the Case

Positive Aspects

A CEO will always consider such a merger to be an occasion to take a competitive advantage over its rivals like IBM as in this case and also be of some interest to the shareholders as well. The following are the strategies that are related to this merger between HP and Compaq:

* Having an eye over shareholders' value: If one sees this merger from the eyes of Fiorina, it would be certain that the shareholders have a lot to gain from it. The reason for the same is the increment in the control of the market. So, even of the conditions were not suitable from the financial perspective, this truth would certainly make a lot of profits for the company in the future.

* Development of Markets: Two organizations get involved in mergers as they want to expand their market both on the domestic and the international level. Integration with a domestic company doesn't need much effort but when a company merges internationally as in this case, a challenging task is on head. A thorough situation scanning is significant before putting your feet in International arena. Here, the competitor for HP was Compaq to a large degree, so this merger certainly required a lot of thinking. Organizations merge with the international companies in order to set up their brands first and let people know about what they are capable of and also what they eye in the future. This is the reason that after this merger the products of Compaq would also have the logo of HP. Once the market is well-known, then HP would not have to suffer the branding created by Compaq. They would be able to draw all the customers of Compaq as well.

* Propagated Efficiencies: Any company by acquiring another or by merging makes an attempt to add to its efficiencies by increasing the operations and also having control over it to the maximum extent. We can see that HP would now have an increased set of employees. The only factor is that they would have to be controlled properly as they are of different organizational cultures. (Benefits of Mergers:, 2010)

* Allowances to use more resources: An improvised organization of monetary resources, intellectual capital and raw materials offers a competitive advantage to the companies. When such companies merge, many of the intellects come together and work towards a common mission to excel with financial profits to the company. Here, one can't deny the fact that even the top brains of Compaq would be taking part in forming the strategies of the company in the future.

* Management of risks: If we particularly take an example of this case, HP and Compaq entering into this merger can decrease the risk level they would have diversified business opportunities. The options for making choice of the supply chain also increase. Now even though HP is a pioneer in inkjet orienting, it would not have to use the Product based Facility layout which is more expensive. It can manage the risk of taking process based facility layout and make things cheaper. Manufacturing and Processing can now be done in various nations according to the cost viability as the major issue.

* Listing potential: Even though Wall Street and all the investors of the company are against the merger, when IPOs are offered, a development will definitely be there because of the flourishing earnings and turnover value which HP would be making with this merger.

* Necessary political regulations: When organizations take a leap into other nations, they need to consider the different regulations in that country which administer the policies of the place. As HP is already a pioneer in all the countries that Compaq used to do its business, this would not be of much difficulty for the company. The company would only need to make certain minor regulations with the political parties of some countries where Compaq was flourishing more than HP.

* Better Opportunities: When companies merge with another company, later they can put up for sale as per as the needs of the company. This could also be done partially. If HP feels that it would not need much of warehouse space it can sell the same at increased profits. It depends on whether the company would now be regarded a s a make to stock or a make to order company.

* Extra products, services, and facilities: Services get copyrights which enhances the level of trade. Additional Warehouse services and distribution channels offer business values. Here HP can use all such values integrated with Compaq so as to increase its prospects. (Berry, 2010)

Negative Aspects

There are a number of mergers and acquisitions that fail before they actually start to function. In the critical phase of implementation itself, the companies come to know that it would not be beneficial if they continue as a merger. This can occur in this merger between HP and Compaq due to the following reasons.

Conversations are not implemented: Because of unlike cultures, ambitions and risk profiles; many of the deals are cancelled. As per as the reactions of the owners of HP, this seems to be extremely likely. So, motivation amongst the employees is an extremely important consideration in this case. This requires an extra effort by the CEO, Fiorina. This could also help her maintain her position in the company.

Legal Contemplations: Anti-competitive deals are often limited by the rules presiding over the competition rules in a country. This leads to out of order functioning of one company and they try to separate from each other. A lot of unnecessary marketing failures get attached to these conditions. If this happens in this case, then all that money which went in publicizing the venture would go to be a waste. Moreover, even more would be required to re-promote as a single entity. Even the packaging where the entire inventory from Compaq had the logo of HP would have to be re-done, thus hampering the finance even further. (Broc Romanek, 2002)

Compatibility problems: Every company runs on different platforms and ideas. Compatibility problems often occur because of synchronization issues. In IT companies such as HP and Compaq, many problems can take place because both the companies have worked on different strategies in the past. Now, it might not seem necessary for the HP management to make changes as per as those from Compaq. Thus such problems have become of greatest concern these days.

Fiscal catastrophes: Both the companies after signing an agreement hope to have some return on the money they have put in to make this merger happen and also desire profitability and turnovers. If due to any reason, they are not able to attain that position, then they develop a abhorrence sense towards each other and also start charging each other for the failure.

Human Resource Differences: Problems as a result of cultural dissimilarities, hospitality and hostility issues, and also other behavior related issues can take apart the origin of the merger.

Lack of Determination: When organizations involve, they have plans in their minds, they have a vision set; but because of a variety of problems as mentioned above, development of the combined company to accomplish its mission is delayed. Merged companies set the goal and when the goal is not accomplished due to some faults of any of the two; then both of them develop a certain degree of hatred for each other. Also clashes can occur because of bias reactions. (William, 2008)

Risk management failure: Companies that are involved in mergers and acquisitions, become over confident that they are going to make a profit out of this decision. This can be seen as with Fiorina. In fact she can fight the whole world for that. When their self-confidence turns out into over-confidence then they fail. Adequate risk management methods should be adopted which would take care of the effects if the decision takes a downturn. These risk policies should rule fiscal, productions, marketing, manufacturing, and inventory and HR risks associated with the merger.

Strategic Sharing

Marketing

Hp and Compaq would now have common channels as far as their buying is concerned. So, the benefits in this concern is that even for those materials which were initially of high cost for HP would now be available at a cheaper price. The end users are also likely to increase. Now, the company can re frame its competitive strategy where the greatest concern can be given to all time rivals IBM. The advantages of this merger in the field of marketing can be seen in the case of shared branding, sales and service. Even the distribution procedure is likely to be enhanced with Compaq playing its part. Now, the company can look forward to cross selling, subsidization and also a reduced cost.
Operations

The foremost advantage in this area is that in the location of raw material. Even the processing style would be same making the products and services synchronized with the ideas and also in making a decent operational strategy. As the philosophical and mechanical control would also be in common, the operational strategy would now be to become the top most in the market. In this respect, the two companies would now have co-production, design and also location of staff. So, the operational strategy of HP would now be to use the process based facility layout and function with the mentioned shared values.
Technology

The technical strategy of the company can also be designed in common now. There is a disadvantage from the perspective of the differentiation that HP had in the field of inkjet printers but the advantages are also plentiful. With a common product and process technology, the technological strategy of the merged company would promote highly economical functioning. This can be done through a common research and development and designing team.
Buying

The buying strategy of the company would also follow a common mechanism. Here, the raw materials, machinery, and power would be common hence decreasing the cost once again. This can be done through a centralized mechanism with a lead purchaser keeping common policies in mind. Now Hp would have to think with a similar attitude for both inkjet printers as well as personal computers. This is because the parameters for manufacturing would also run on equal grounds.
Infrastructure

This is the most important part of the strategies that would be made after the merger. The companies would have common shareholders for providing the requisite infrastructure. The capital source, management style, and legislation would also be in common. So, the infrastructure strategies would have to take these things into account. This can be done by having a common accounting system. HP does have an option to have a separate accounting system for the products that it manufactures but that would only arouse an internal competition. So, the infrastructural benefits can be made through a common accounting, legal and human resource system. This would ensure that the investment relations of the company would improve. None of the Compaq investors would hesitate in making an investment if HP follows a common strategy.

HP would now have to ensure another fact that with this merger they would be able to prove competitors to the present target and those of competitors like IBM as well. Even the operations and the output market needs to be above what exists at present. The company needs to ensure that the corporate strategy that it uses is efficient enough to help such a future. The degree of diversification needs to be managed thoroughly as well. This is because; the products from the two companies have performed exceptionally well in the past. So, the most optimum degree of diversification is required under the context so that the company is able to meet the demands of the customers. This has been challenged by the owners of HP but needs to be carried by the CEO Fiorina. (Bhattacharya, 2010)

How to Create an XP Bootable USB Flash Drive

An XP bootable flash drive is a flash memory device that has been configured to allow you to boot up Windows XP on a computer by plugging in your flash drive device into the USB port. An XP bootable flash drive is highly useful for two purposes:

Booting up XP to troubleshoot on any computer that permits the boot. Transporting Windows applications between different physical locations such as home and the office.

HP Pavillion

To create an XP bootable flash drive, you first need a computer that has BIOS that will permit you to configure its USB port as a configurable device. Then you need a flash memory drive that is set up to be able to act as a booting device. It might not be readily known at first if you have a flash memory drive that is going to boot; one thing to look for when you access a computer's BIOS is whether or not the plugged-in flash drive appears in the listed items on the setup screen. Hopefully this happens, and you can then select this as the first device to check during your boot sequence. Some computers might require that you hit F10 to select your flash memory device.

How to Create an XP Bootable USB Flash Drive

Assuming that you have the computer and the drive that you need, now you need to get the software that will permit you to condense Windows XP onto your flash memory device. This includes: PE Builder, which is easy to install just by following the directions; you need to install it into your root directory and make a folder in C:PEBUILDER3110a called SRSP1. This will enable you to download Windows Server 2003 Service Pack One to this place. There are only two files you need from it: setupldr.bin and ramdisk.sys. Don't extract anything else, because you may totally corrupt your current version of Windows if you do. Specifically, never run the Windows Server 2003 SP1 executable file.

Once you have these files, run your PE Builder CD (Windows XP Professional CD). Make sure you hold down the [Shift] key to prevent Autostart from launching the CD. Launch PE Builder manually. When the Source field on the main PE Builder screen, enter the letter of the drive in which you put the CD. Check to see that the Output box contains BartPE and that the "None" option is selected in the Media Output panel. Once you have all this squared away, click Build. You can watch the progress of the compression.

When it's complete you're prepared to format and copy the Windows XP Professional bootable image to the UFD with the BartPE USB Installer. Open a Command Prompt window and use the CD command to switch to the pebuilder3110a folder. Next, insert the UFD into a USB port; note the drive letter to which it is assigned, as you'll need to enter it into your next command prompt that you type.

Let's imagine that it was assigned to drive E. You will now type the following command (take note of the last letter in the command). pe2usb -f e:

When Bart is all done, you just hit any key to exit the program, and you have your XP bootable flash drive.

Nordic Track C 900 Treadmill Review

The Nordic Track C 900 treadmill is one of Nordic Track's newest 2011 models, currently coming in at around 9. Most manufacturers - including Nordic Track - improve on older models every year.

And the C900 treadmill is no exception to this policy, coming with an upgraded motor, higher 15% incline and some very cool fitness tracking tools designed to entertain even the pickiest exerciser.

Cut HP

Is it the right treadmill for you? Well, here's an overview of some of the strengths and weaknesses of the C900 treadmill to help you decide:

Nordic Track C 900 Treadmill Review

Strengths:

#1 Strong 3.0 HP Motor

This is one of the highest motor powers you can find at this price point. Many treadmills under 00 give you from 1.5 to 2.75 HP. The motor also runs pretty quiet and will give you more than enough power to run the extra long 60" belt.

#2 Long 60" Belt

This is one of the longer belts you can find on a treadmill and it gives you a lot of extra room to move. Runners and taller users will especially like it. While a longer belt is usually found in 00+ treadmills, it's not as common at this price point.

#3 Run Trails All Over the World With iFit Live

The Nordic Track C 900 treadmill comes with iFit LIVE. This means that if you have wireless Internet in your home you can connect the C900 treadmill to the Internet. iFit LIVE is powered by Googlemaps and Google terrain so that you can run or walk different trails all over the world. You can even map out your own course.

You can customize and download your own workout programs and workout with Jillian Michaels from 'The Biggest Loser' - where she coaches you through your workout through the console speakers.

You can also track your activity and nutrition online and even download new daily workouts. So you'll always have a new challenge.

#4 iPod/Mp3 Port With Speakers Built Into the Console

You can plug your iPod or MP3 player into the built-in audio jack and listen to your favorite music or audiobooks while you workout. This is a fairly common feature these days in many treadmills - but it's still a nice touch to have on the C900 that can make your workouts more enjoyable.

#5 High 15% Incline

Most treadmills under 00 only give you 10% incline - or 12% at best. With this higher incline you can burn more calories, build in tougher intervals and push yourself farther.

Weaknesses:

If you don't have wireless Internet in your home, you won't get the full use out of iFit LIVE - although there are still 20 built in workout programs you can use as well.

Also while the C900 is a great starter treadmill, if you're looking for a commercial grade feel or something specifically built for runners with some extra substance you may want to look at higher end models.

The Bottom Line:

The Nordic Track C 900 treadmill is an impressive new 2011 model from Nordic Track, giving you a strong motor, long belt and some fun, cutting-edge workout toys. Buyers seem to agree as well. According to my sources at Nordic Track it's actually outselling one of their most popular treadmills - the A2750 - at a 2 to 1 ratio.

While it doesn't have the substance of a commercial health club treadmill, for the price you do get a lot of value. It might be worth checking out if you're looking for a good buy for under 00.

A List of Basic Hand Tools For Setting Up Shop

Below I recommend several brands of tools. These are tools I own and have a lot of experience with or have used in the past and like. This doesn't mean that these brands are the only ones out there or are even the best. Ask around and find out what other people like and use. Ultimately you have to make your own decision on which tools are best for you and how you work.

Woodworking covers so many facets that it's difficult to come up with a tool list that covers the needs of every woodworker. Many tools are used for a very specific task, while others are more general tools that you find yourself using for most projects. The latter is what I'll concentrate on in this article. Just keep in mind that if you want to learn how to make guitars (a Luther), or build a canoe, etc...there will definitely be tools that you will need that won't be on this list. This is just to get you started. I've been working wood for over 10 years and trust me there are still many tools I would love to have. But just like I did you start with the basics and buy other tools as you find a need for them.

Hand Tools

A List of Basic Hand Tools For Setting Up Shop

Machine tools: screwdrivers, Allen wrenches, set to wrenches, pliers, crescent wrench. These are things that most already have around the house, but it definitely doesn't hurt to have a set of these tools that are dedicated just to your shop so you don't have to hunt all over the house when you need a Phillips screwdriver. These can all be picked up at your local hardware store.

Set of bench chisels: 1/4" to 1". I've used a set of Marples chisels for years. Irwin has bought them so they may show up under their name now. The full set costs around .00 Cheaper chisels just won't hold an edge (meaning they dull too easily). The Marple chisels hold an edge OK. Home Depot and Lowes used to carry them but they're not showing up on their websites now. Amazon.com has them for

Handplanes: A jack plane (sometimes referred to as a No. 5) and a low angle block plane. The jack plane gets it's name from being the "jack of all trades". It's a medium size plane and can be used for many tasks. I recommend buying a used one, specifically an old Stanley No. 5. Look at flea markets and garage sells or try eBay (this is where I got mine years ago). A block plane will be one of the most used tools in your shop, so buy a good one. If you can afford it Lie-Nielsen.com or Lee Valley.com both have excellent low angle blocks from to 9 A cheaper alternative would be a Stanley 60 1/2 low angle block for around .

Handsaws: panel, or Japanese Ryoba and Dozuki. Western saws cut on the push stroke; Japanese saws cut on the pull stroke. My advice is to try out both and see which you like better. Each has its own set of advantages and disadvantages. Personally, I like the Japanese saws for most jobs, but I still like a western type saw for cutting dovetails. Lowes and Home Depot both carry Japanese saws. Another good place to look is Japanwoodworker.com

Layout tools:tape measure, small and large size try squares, marking gauge, pencil compass, 6" and 12" rulers, bevel gauge, combination square.

Hammer: 16oz standard and a wooden or dead-blowstyle mallet for working with chisels and other tools.

Card scraper: an inexpensive tool that is indispensable in the shop (especially if you dislike sanding). These tools can take extremely thin shavings of wood and leave a very smooth surface. They can be tricky to sharpen though. We'll cover scrapers more in depth in a future article.

Rasps: a coarse and fine cabinetmaker's style. These are used to shape wood especially table legs.

There's my list of basic hand tools to get you started. Some, you will need from the very beginning. Some you can wait on. My advice is to figure out what you want to make with your woodworking and then start building. You'll figure out quickly the tools you really need and the ones you can wait to get.

Connect PC to TV

How do you connect pc to TV? What are the tools that you need or is there any software necessary to accomplish this?

To have a connection between your pc and TV you would need a cable which would serve as a converter. The cable is a cord which connects to the pc and outputs the image coming from the monitor to the television which the other cable end is connected. This would allow you to watch internet TV or DVD in your pc DVD drive but the viewing would be seen on the TV. It's like making your TV a huge monitor for your pc where you can actually surf the Net, view pictures and many more. If you enjoy home entertainment, or love to watch movies at home, this is the initial move to making a Home Theatre PC.

HP Pavillion

There are various kinds of PC to TV cables, each function in somewhat dissimilar ways. One of the known differences between cables is the way it is connected to the pc. This can be done on the outputs of the computers video card wherein the monitor is connected. Another cause of differences between cables is the way it is connected to the television; they have types of input connections. The third reason is because some cables serves as converters. A regular PC/TV cable simply directs what's on the pc to the television. But if you have a modernized TV with several enhancement options and your pc is well upgraded, then you might be able to manipulate on how to make the images appear better on the TV screen. If the cable is a converter then the images will automatically be adjusted, meaning you don't need to change any settings on your pc or tv. You simply need to plug the cable and watch the videos. These types of cables usually necessitate a power source like USB port from your pc.

Connect PC to TV

What must you do to connect pc to TV? What you need to do is connect the USB cord of the PC to TV cable into its matching port on your computer. Next is to link the VGA Y-cord's blue connector marked as "PC" to the monitor or VGA port that can be found at the back of your computer. You could either link the composite video which is indicated through a yellow RCA jack or an S-Video which is a pure black 4-pin connection output to an S-Video cable or composite video cable. Not to worry if you lack a video cable as this is easily available at any hardware or electronics store. You must link the VGA monitor cord with the VGA Y-cord's blue connector marked as "monitor". If you are using a laptop then the end connector which is marked as "monitor" cannot be used. You must connect the video cable end with the video input of the TV or projector or any other equipment that you will utilize. You can toggle the input display to match with the input video that you're going to use. With the toggle option you can control the input to display whatever you prefer the tv to display. Each TV differs from the other so you could refer the TV user guide for further instructions. Finally you could turn on the pc and let it boot up for you to see the result.

Legacy Audio Drivers - Resolving Missing Sound

Missing or corrupt legacy audio drivers are perhaps one of the more common problems that you may be encountering with your home set up at any point of your computing experience. Just a quick look on the various tech forums reveals that this is indeed quite a problem for many people out there and the extent of Microsoft's technical support will be to ask you to uninstall and reinstall the product, which in most cases is not very helpful.

True, some of the time, you can solve this problem using this method but more often than not, the problem lies much deeper than just removing and adding the product back to the device manager field. The common visual marker of this problem happening to you will be that the 'Sound, Video and Game Controllers,' category will indicate to you a yellow exclamation mark, which is telling you that there is a problem with your legacy audio drivers. What you will hear is essentially nothing, because there will be no sound coming through your speakers no matter how loud you turn the volume knob up.

HP Pavillion

The problem is down to the fact that Windows was unable to load the device driver because either it is corrupt or missing or some of the device profile aspects will show you that the device is not even installed in the first place. This means that your legacy sound card is sitting inside your PC inert and not functioning, with the motherboard unable to activate it with the proper use of software drivers.

Legacy Audio Drivers - Resolving Missing Sound

Even using the PC Doctor will result in it telling you that the drivers are possibly not installed properly. You can use diagnostic tools like DriverAgent, which is a software that runs through all your legacy drivers and tells you where and what file is the problem, and may even give you a solution to the problem. AC'97 Audio drivers are one way to fix the problem, by replacing the legacy audio drivers that are corrupt or incompatible with the motherboard or OS of your system.

Before you think about replacing the drivers with universal ones, you also might want to try and get a copy of the drivers that have been given to you on CD, as sometimes, they are incomplete and corrupt due to the CD being damaged or a bad data transfer process. Use the second option first, and then if that does not work, try to replace them with universal drivers.

Another possibility could be an internal conflict within the Windows environment itself, and all you might need to do is to go online and key in your product and the problem it is giving you. 99% of the time you will be able to find other people who have encountered the same problem as you have, and you would then be able to resolve it rather quickly.

Your last resort would have to be sending the product back as there may be a problem with the hardware itself. With these simple steps, you might be able to resolve missing sound from your legacy audio device.

Hip Roof Framing Plans - Designs and Illustrations

Equal pitch hip roof framing plans showing basic hip framing layout and placement of common rafters and hip roof rafters by custom house plan designer.

In this article we will try to show you how to build a simple "hip roof" and try and show the component parts that make up an "equal pitch hip roof" structure using the "double cheek cut hip rafter method" used by most framers today.

Cut HP

In this method of construction the center ridge board will grow by half the thickness of the ridge board material, usually 3/4" at each end of the structure.

Hip Roof Framing Plans - Designs and Illustrations

In this example we are looking down on the right rear corner of a simple rectangular building. Using half the span distance of the building less half the ridge board thickness which is 3/4" in this example, mark your top plate and set ahead 1 1/2". That will be the location of the first common rafter front and rear on both ends of the building.

Your jack rafters will start from that position and layout on 16" centers toward the right rear corner. This is the hip and jack rafter measurements as shown in this example. You could actually cut all four hip sections from these measurements and they would complete your rafter construction perfectly.

But that would not work well for ceiling joist layout and being able to tie both rafters (common and Jacks) together to create a solid and well built home. So we would want to offset the common and jack rafters 1 1/2" to allow both to be able to lap beside each other and be nailed together forming a well built roof system.

This method will cause all of the rafters and jack rafters on the front side to maintain a 16" on center balance.

This makes cutting the roof sheathing much easier and quicker. In the event the ceiling joist are used as a attic flooring your plywood sheathing will work well also.

Note: This will force you to custom cut the front right corner as well as the front and rear sections on the left end of the building. I show this in figure #4 marked "Special Cut Jack Rafter Layout" near the bottom of the page.

Not to worry though its easy to do. The right front section jacks would simply be 1 1/2" shorter. The left end can be simply measured once your layout work is complete maintaining your 16" on center the entire width of the building. The remaining jack rafters in these two sections would simply decrease each one by a given number according to the roof pitch used.

Common Rafters:
Common rafters are the same on gable roofs as well as on hip roofs and can be figured exactly the same way.

Hip Corners:
Regular pitch hip roofs means that all four sides are on the same angle plane and will run at a 45 degree angle directly from the corner to the end of the center ridge board.

Hip Rafters:
Hip roof rafters are designed with a lower pitch so the corner can be made and roof sheathing can be applied to form the corner of the structure properly. It also carries the smaller jack rafters.

Plan View:
Our plan detail drawing shows all four corners of this simple hip roof structure with all common rafters, hips and jack rafters fitting together properly.

Equal Pitch Roof Rafter Layout:
Placing the ridge and common rafters should be the first thing to be laid out on your wall top plates. From this layout you can mark out all the rest of the common and jack rafter positions. It might be a good idea to draw a big X where the rafters will actually set.

Hip Rafter Side Cut Angles:
This side cut angle can be obtained the same way as the jack rafter cheek cut angle.

Jack Rafter Side Cut Angles:
Side cut angles or commonly called cheek cuts enable the jack rafter to connect properly with the side of the hip rafter.

Plywood Cut Angles:
Even though a equal pitch hip roof has hips running inward at a 45 degree angle the plywood sheathing cut angle is very different and on our 4x12 pitch roof example it turns out to be 46.53 degrees.

Jack Rafters:
Jack rafters start with the first common rafter and continue on to make up the complete corner. These must be calculated properly to fit in order for the sheathing to continue to the corner. When installing your jack rafters be sure to straighten the hip rafter and install the first two jack rafters some where in the middle to secure the hip. When you install one side install the other side of the hip as well. This will help keep the hip rafter nice and straight.

Typical Ceiling Joist Layout:
Ceiling joist layout if placed properly will enable you to set all rafters much quicker and finish with a very neat project.

Framing A Hip Roof

One of the two most popular roof designs, if not the most popular is the hip roof. Not only
does it add architectural lines to the design of a house, but it also offers more protection
from the elements to walls, windows, and doors, when framed with a generous overhang. It
also lends more to the structural integrity of a home with its rafters tying off to all four
corners and walls of the structure.

A hip roof is a little more complex to frame than a gable roof. Besides a ridge board, a
gable roof has only common rafters (all rafters the same length) as its only components. The
components of a hip roof are the ridge board, common rafters, hip rafters, and jack rafters.
The hip roof does not always have a ridge board. If the building is a square with all four
walls being the same length, there will be no ridge and the roof will resemble a pyramid.
When cutting the common, hip and jack rafters, their lengths can be determined by using a
calculator or a rafter table book like "The Full Length Rafter Framer". the length of the
ridge can be determined by subtracting the width of the building from its length. For
example, if the building is 30 x 24, the ridge will be 6 feet in length. If the ridge board
is 1 1/2" thick (which is usually the case), then 1 1/2" needs to be added to the ridge
length. This is because all common rafters are shortened half the thickness of the ridge or
3/4". This allows the top of the common rafters to line up with the top of the ridge at each
end.

Cut HP

When framing a hip roof, always start with the common rafters. This will place the ridge in
its proper location. This part of the roof is framed like a gable roof, but the similarity
ends there.

Framing A Hip Roof

Start by nailing common rafters on one side of the ridge at each end. Now raise the ridge
and nail two rafters on the other side of the ridge opposite the first two rafters. Once
this is done, push the ridge up so the birdsmouth cuts pull in tight to the walls on each
side of the building. These rafters can now be nailed to the wall in their corresponding
locations in relation to the ridge. Now nail the two common rafters to the center of the end
walls and to the ends of the ridge board. This will lock the ridge in its exact location.
The rest of the common rafters can be nailed to the wall and ridge board.
The next parts to be installed are the four hip rafters. These are nailed on the outside
corners of the buildings walls and in the intersection made by the end and first common
rafter where they meet at the ridge. With the hips and common rafters in place, its easy to
see why this makes for such a strong and solid roof.

With the hip rafters in place the jack rafters can be installed. Before nailing on the first
jack rafter, a string must be run from the plumb cut on the hip rafter to just above the
birdsmouth. This can be done by driving a nail in the center of the hip at the above mentioned
locations. Tie the string to one nail, pull it tight, and secure it to the other nail. This
is to ensure the hip rafter stays straight during the jack rafter installation. As the jacks
are nailed on, the string should be kept at the center of the hip. To help keep the hip
rafter straight, the jack rafters should be nailed on in pairs, first one side of the hip,
then its mate on the other. This process is continued all the way down the the hip rafter
till all jack rafters are installed on both sides of the hip. Remove the string and repeat
this procedure on the remaining three hip rafters to complete the framing of the roof.
Collar ties and fascia boards will need to be installed before the roof can be sheathed, but
these are the basic steps to framing a hip roof.
